Seasonal Pet Tips
Heartworm and Lyme Disease Prevention
As the weather heats up, the parasite population increases. In our area, ticks and mosquitoes are very prevalent, which can mean trouble for your pet. Ticks carry Lyme disease, and mosquitoes carry heartworm disease. Both of these diseases are dangerous and can have fatal consequences if left untreated.
Symptoms of Lyme disease in pets:
- Loss of appetite
- Swollen joints
Symptoms of heartworm disease in pets:
- Rapid or difficulty breathing
- Weight loss
- Bulging chest
- Heart failure (in extreme cases)
The good thing is that these diseases are easily preventable. We carry a variety of parasite preventatives that can keep your pet safe from these dangerous pests, and our veterinarians recommend keeping your pet on preventative medications year-round to keep them protected in any season.
If you suspect your pet may be suffering from heartworm or Lyme disease, bring them in to our clinic and we will have them tested. One of our veterinarians can also help you decide which parasite preventative is best for your pet based on their age, size, and lifestyle.
